“Why Did You Dance? “ Dancers of New Mexico and How They Shaped Our History.

(A Completely Incomplete History of Belly Dance in New Mexico)

Have you ever wondered about how belly dance happened here in the high desert of New Mexico? Who were the teachers of your teachers? Well, here are some stories of the women and men who loved, learned, performed and taught this dance form. In the days before there was a YouTube, before you could easily access video of any kind, there were those who brought this art form to life here in our state. This is by no means a complete history, but it’s a start. There are so many beautiful dancers in our state, with amazing stories. We will be sharing these stories and giving you a little of the history of belly dance here in New Mexico! All are welcome!

What Our Students Are Saying

During the pandemic Sirena World Dance Studio has been a saving grace! These ladies have delivered excellent virtual classes in which I've been able to keep up with my personal practice. I don't live in ABQ, but if I did I would certainly try an in person class. If you're looking for some make-your-brain-work world dance fun I highly recommend these mermaids!"
-Yolanda

"I have been wanting to take classes at Sirena ever since their "open house" style day with previews of all the teachers and finally in quarantine have been able to take the zoom classes! I love them!! I have only taken zoom classes with Sadie so far, but they are a lot of fun. It is exciting seeing so many happy people come together to learn this beautiful art."
-Alex

"A wonderfully supportive studio with the most amazing, kindest, sweetest, and most creative teachers! This studio brings inspiring performance art and opportunities to be involved in new ways to Albuquerque. I am so grateful to this hardworking and talented community."
-Katherine

"This studio is my favorite part of Albuquerque. The teachers are excellent dancers, but also very fun and welcoming. I take all the intro and half the level 1 classes. It's my happy place and would be yours too if you sign up."
